CDG Newport recently hosted a careers fair on the Isle of Wight.
Four of the Island’s leading training providers teamed up with back-to-work charity Careers Development Group (CDG) to host the largest careers fair the Isle of Wight has seen.
Held at Newport Football Club on Tuesday 9 April, over 700 people attended the event, meeting face to face and holding discussions with the thirty exhibitors present at the fair.
Local jobseekers had the opportunity to speak to potential employers as well as get information about the opportunities available to them from training providers HTP, The Isle of Wight College, Island Training and Smart Training.
Careers Development Group customer, Richard Poulter said: “It’s been really successful. I’ve managed to give out 20 copies of my CV, and I’ve got two employers ringing me next week about potential positions”.
CDG has a centre in Newport, and works with people on the Isle of Wight, helping them to find employment through the Work Programme, a government funded initiative. In 2012 CDG merged with national employment charity Shaw Trust to provide an even better service for jobseekers.
One local employer commented: “I’ve seen a lot of potential in the jobseekers today. There is a really diverse range of people who have turned up. This is one of the most successful careers fairs we have attended”.
CDG employer relationship manager Reuben Loake said: “The feedback from the public has been very positive with many emailing and calling to thank us and the employers for making the day such a positive experience. Several of our customers have also secured interviews after speaking to employers on the day. We would like to extend special thanks to Newport FC for their support”.
